Litter box avoidance is the number one reason cats are surrendered to shelters. Before giving up, try these proven solutions.
Reason 1: Dirty Litter Box
Cats are fastidiously clean. If the box is not scooped daily, they will find alternatives. Solution: Scoop daily, full change every 2-4 weeks. Consider our Self-Cleaning Litter Box that automatically removes waste.
Reason 2: Wrong Litter Type
Cats have strong preferences. If you recently changed litter, switch back. Our Crystal Silica Litter is preferred by many cats for its texture and low dust.
Reason 3: Box Too Small
The box should be 1.5x the length of your cat. Most commercial boxes are too small. Try a larger storage container as a litter box.
Reason 4: Wrong Location
Cats need privacy and quiet. Move the box away from noisy appliances, high-traffic areas and their food bowls.
Reason 5: Not Enough Boxes
Rule: One box per cat plus one extra. Two cats need three boxes minimum.
Reason 6: Medical Issue
Urinary tract infections, kidney disease and arthritis can cause litter box avoidance. If the problem is sudden, see a vet immediately.
Reason 7: Stress or Anxiety
New pets, moving or changes in routine cause stress. Our Cat Calming Treats with L-Theanine can help reduce anxiety.
Reason 8: Negative Association
If your cat was startled near the box, they may avoid it. Move the box to a new location and make it positive with treats nearby.
Reason 9: Covered Box Preference
Some cats hate covered boxes (feel trapped), others prefer them (privacy). Try both styles to see what your cat prefers.
Cleaning Accidents
Use our Enzyme Odor Eliminator to completely remove urine smell. Regular cleaners don't break down the enzymes that attract cats back.
